1. Overview
ExpenseDiary is designed to keep your financial information on your device. We don't operate a backend server, so there's no company database of your expenses to secure, leak, or sell — as we like to put it, we don't have a backend server to share it from.
This policy explains exactly what data the app touches, where it goes, and what you control.
2. Data Stored Locally On Your Device
Your transactions, categories, and reminders live in a local database on your phone — nothing is sent to us. Specifically, this local database includes:
- Transaction amounts, dates, types (income/expense), and any free-text notes you add to an entry
- Your custom categories (names, icons, colors)
- Bill reminders (title, amount, due date, repeat schedule, paid status)
- If you sign in with Google: your name, email address, and profile photo (stored locally, not on our servers — see below)
- Your app preferences (currency, date format, theme, start-of-week, Premium status)
3. Google Sign-In (Optional)
Signing in with Google is entirely optional and is only used to personalize your profile and to enable Google Drive backup. When you sign in, the app requests your name, email address, and profile photo via Google's Credential Manager. This information is stored locally on your device — we do not receive, see, or store it on any server of ours.
Signing out clears your session on the device but does not, by itself, delete anything already stored locally or previously backed up to Drive (see "Managing and Deleting Your Data" below).
4. Google Drive Backup (Optional, Premium Feature)
If you enable backup, ExpenseDiary writes a single backup file to a restricted, hidden area of your Google Drive called the app data folder — a space Google reserves for each app's own use. This folder is not visible in your regular Drive file list, and we do not read, analyze, or access this file ourselves. Only the ExpenseDiary app, acting with your permission, can read or write it.
This backup is transmitted over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection and stored subject to Google's own Drive security. The app itself does not add a separate layer of encryption to the backup file's contents.
5. Automatic Android Backup
Separately from the Drive backup feature above, Android's built-in Auto Backup system may automatically back up ExpenseDiary's app data (including your local database) to your Google Account's device backup storage, as it does for most Android apps, whenever your device is set up to do so. This happens at the operating-system level, governed by your device's own backup settings — it is not something the app initiates and is not gated behind signing in or Premium status. You can control or disable this at any time in your device's Settings → Google → Backup, or by managing app backup settings for ExpenseDiary directly.
6. Advertising (Google AdMob)
Non-Premium users may see ads served through Google AdMob, Google's mobile advertising network. AdMob can collect device and advertising identifiers, general device information, and ad interaction data to serve and measure ads, under Google's own privacy policy. We do not run any advertising network beyond AdMob, and we do not receive this data ourselves.
You can reset or limit your advertising identifier, and opt out of personalized ads, in your device's Google Settings under Ads.
Purchasing "Go Premium" removes all ads.
7. Purchases (Google Play Billing)
Premium purchases are processed entirely through Google Play Billing. We never see or handle your payment details (card numbers, billing address, etc.) — that information is handled directly by Google Play. We only receive confirmation of whether you own the Premium entitlement.
8. No Analytics or Trackers
ExpenseDiary does not include any analytics SDK, crash-reporting SDK, or tracking library of any kind. No usage data, crash reports, or behavioral data is collected or transmitted anywhere. Beyond Google Sign-In, Drive, AdMob, and Play Billing described above, no other third party or data broker is involved.
9. Managing and Deleting Your Data
You're in control of your data at all times:
- Uninstalling the app permanently removes its local database from your device (subject to any copy retained by Android Auto Backup, described above, until that backup is also cleared or expires).
- Revoking ExpenseDiary's access in your Google Account's third-party app permissions stops the app from syncing to Drive going forward. Note that this stops future access — it does not immediately delete a backup file already written to Drive's app data folder; that file is only accessible to the app and is not visible or usable by anyone else in the meantime.
- Signing out clears your signed-in session on the device but does not delete your local data or any existing Drive backup.
We're evaluating adding an in-app option to erase local data and delete any existing Drive backup directly; this policy will be updated when that ships.
10. Children's Privacy
ExpenseDiary is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as the app changes. Material changes will be reflected by updating the Effective Date above.
